MESTRES DE L’ART CATALÀ DEL SEGLE XX EXHIBITION

The Girona Art Museum presents the exhibition “Masters of 20th-Century Catalan Art. Bassat Collection.”

This exhibition brings together a selection of works from the extensive Carmen and Lluís Bassat Collection, conceived as a mosaic representing various periods of 20th-century Catalan art. Despite some absences, the exhibition offers a timeline that helps us understand the historical evolution of Catalan art through creators who, in their time, opened new expressive paths.

This selection embraces diversity and highlights several indispensable figures in any historical or museographic approach. Ultimately, it brings together creators who championed renewal and who belong to the elite of the Catalan artistic scene, distinguished by the individuality and quality of their work.

Carmen Orellana and Lluís Bassat are passionate collectors who, over more than forty years, have built an exceptional art collection. Their passion and perseverance, combined with sound judgement and a strong interest in the cultural and social impact of art, have led them to gather a substantial body of works that constitutes one of the most representative collections of 20th-century Spanish and Catalan art.

The current exhibition offers a small taste of the Bassat Collection, with the aim of showcasing works and artists who are fundamental to 20th-century Catalan art. It features a carefully curated selection of 67 pieces—paintings and sculptures—by a total of 63 artists, chosen from a collection of more than 3,000 works. The goal is to highlight the importance of the collection in the narrative of Catalan art, while also underscoring the public significance of private collecting and the valuable role collectors have played in supporting the artistic and heritage ecosystem.
